Preparing for Your First Session

Your first electrolysis session should not feel like a surprise. Here is everything I tell new clients before they come in for the first time.
Grow Out the Hair
I need hair to be present in the follicle to treat it. Please stop waxing, threading, tweezing, and using epilators for at least two weeks before your appointment — ideally three to four weeks for coarser areas. Shaving is fine because it does not disturb the follicle.
The hair does not need to be long. A few millimeters is enough. What matters is that the hair is in the follicle and growing, so I can insert the probe correctly and trace the follicle's angle.
Avoid These on Appointment Day
- Caffeine — Increases skin sensitivity and can make the treatment feel more uncomfortable than necessary. Skip the coffee that morning.
- Alcohol — Thins the blood and increases inflammation. Avoid it the night before and the day of your appointment.
- Heavy moisturizers — Unless I have specifically recommended one, do not apply anything thick to the treatment area. A clean, dry surface is easier to work on.
- Sun exposure — Sunburned or recently tanned skin is more reactive. Come in with normal, unexposed skin.
What to Expect
A first session is usually 30 to 60 minutes depending on the area. I will start by reviewing your medical history briefly — some medications and conditions affect how we approach treatment — and then we will begin.
You will feel something. The sensation varies by person and body area: a warmth, a small sting, a mild prick. Most clients describe it as entirely manageable, and the sensation diminishes over subsequent sessions as the follicles become less robust. If at any point you want to stop or take a short break, just say so.
After the session, the skin will likely look slightly pink or irritated — similar to what you would see after threading. This typically resolves within a few hours to a day. I will give you specific aftercare instructions before you leave.
Questions to Ask
Do not hesitate to ask about treatment timeline, expected costs, how many sessions a given area typically requires, or anything else that is on your mind. I would rather answer questions upfront than have you leave with uncertainty. We are going to be working together for a while, and that relationship works best when everything is clear from the start.
Bring a book, headphones, or simply plan to rest. Some clients find the sessions meditative. Others chat. There is no right way — the only requirement is that you stay still.
