When clients ask me why electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal method, I always start with the same thing: the follicle itself.

Every hair on your body grows from a follicle — a tiny tube-shaped structure embedded in the dermis. Inside that follicle is the dermal papilla, a cluster of cells that receives blood supply and drives hair growth. As long as the papilla is intact and receiving nutrients, hair will grow back. Every time, without fail.

What Electrolysis Actually Does

Electrolysis destroys the dermal papilla. Not weakens it. Not temporarily disrupts it. Destroys it.

A fine, sterile probe — about the diameter of a single hair — is inserted into the follicle alongside the existing hair. A precise amount of electrical energy is then delivered directly to the papilla. There are three modalities:

  • Galvanic: Uses direct current to create a chemical reaction at the papilla, producing sodium hydroxide that dissolves the papilla at the cellular level.
  • Thermolysis: Uses high-frequency alternating current to generate heat directly in the follicle, destroying the papilla with thermal energy.
  • Blend: Combines both modalities simultaneously, leveraging the chemical effect of galvanic while using thermolysis to speed the reaction. This is the modality I use most often.

After treatment, the hair slides out of the follicle without resistance — because there is no longer anything holding it. When the papilla is properly destroyed, that follicle cannot produce a new hair. Ever.

Why This Matters for Permanence

The U.S. FDA reviewed decades of clinical research before making a determination about which methods can be marketed as "permanent hair removal." Their conclusion: only electrolysis. Every other method — including laser, IPL, and everything marketed as "permanent hair reduction" — is classified differently because the results are different.

Laser and IPL work by targeting melanin with light energy. They can damage the follicle significantly, often producing long-lasting reduction. But they cannot reliably destroy every follicle in a treatment area, they are ineffective on light, grey, red, or fine hair, and treated follicles can regenerate when hormonal or physiological conditions change. The FDA recognizes this — which is why the language "permanent hair reduction" is used.

Electrolysis does not rely on pigment. The probe targets the follicle anatomically, not optically. That means it works on every hair color, every skin tone, every body area. And when the papilla is destroyed, it stays destroyed.

A Note on Multiple Sessions

Clients sometimes ask why electrolysis requires multiple sessions if it permanently destroys follicles. The answer is the hair growth cycle.

At any given time, hairs on your body are in different phases — actively growing (anagen), transitioning (catagen), or resting (telogen). Electrolysis is most effective on follicles in the anagen phase. Follicles in resting phases need to cycle into active growth before they can be treated permanently.

Treatment plans typically span 12 to 24 months, with sessions becoming less frequent as the total number of active follicles decreases. By the end of a complete treatment, the area is genuinely, permanently clear.

That is the science. And that is why, after 20 years of doing this, I still believe electrolysis is the only honest answer to permanent hair removal.
