Why Laser Isn't Always Permanent

I want to be careful about how I write this, because laser hair removal is a legitimate treatment that produces real results for many people. But there is a specific, important difference between what laser achieves and what electrolysis achieves — and the way the industry sometimes talks about laser creates confusion that harms clients.

What the FDA Actually Says

In the United States, the FDA classifies hair removal methods with specific language that is not interchangeable. Electrolysis is the only method approved for marketing as permanent hair removal. Laser is approved for marketing as permanent hair reduction.

These are not the same thing, and the difference is not semantic. It reflects the clinical evidence. When a properly performed electrolysis treatment destroys the dermal papilla of a follicle, that follicle cannot regrow hair. Laser — even at high intensities — cannot reliably destroy every treated follicle. Many are significantly damaged and regrow much more slowly, or produce finer hair, or stop temporarily. But they remain capable of regeneration under the right hormonal conditions.

Why Laser Cannot Be Permanent by Design

Laser targets melanin — the pigment that gives hair its color. The laser energy is absorbed by the pigment, converted to heat, and that heat damages the follicle. This works for dark hair on lighter skin where there is high contrast.

But melanin targeting has inherent limitations:

  • Light, blonde, red, grey, and white hair contains little to no melanin. Laser has minimal effect on these hair types regardless of skin tone.
  • In darker skin, the melanin in the skin itself absorbs laser energy alongside the follicle, increasing the risk of burns, hyperpigmentation, and hypopigmentation. More conservative settings are required, which often reduces efficacy.
  • Hormonal changes — pregnancy, menopause, thyroid fluctuations — can stimulate dormant follicles even after laser treatment, producing new growth in treated areas.
  • The thermal damage laser delivers is not always sufficient to fully destroy the papilla. Damaged-but-intact follicles can recover over time.

What Laser Is Good For

For clients with dark hair and lighter skin, laser can produce dramatic, long-lasting reduction with fewer sessions and faster treatment of large areas than electrolysis. If someone wants significantly reduced hair density in their legs or back and they are a suitable candidate, laser is a reasonable choice.

The problem is when clients are told they are receiving permanent hair removal and later discover that regrowth has occurred, or that their grey hairs were never affected, or that they need indefinite touch-up sessions. The expectation has been set incorrectly.

When Electrolysis Is the Right Answer

Electrolysis is the right answer when the goal is genuine, complete permanence. When the hair is light, grey, or red. When the skin tone makes laser risky. When the area is too small or precise for laser to address cleanly — like individual facial hairs or eyebrow shaping. When someone has already done laser and has residual growth they want gone permanently.

I see clients every week who are in that last category. They have done laser. They have had real results. And they have hairs left — lighter ones, finer ones, ones that were never going to respond to light — that they want resolved permanently. That is what electrolysis is for.
